Well good morning Mercury in Leslieville, it is I, Mercury on Main writing to you. While you are busy fighting off the morning hordes I am left here quietly yearning for your company yet again. I miss your intense gaze in the morning, the scent you leave in my bed, and most of all, your the way you touch my face everyday before we part ways expelling any need to further use anymore words. As I enjoy my morning press of Kenya 'AA' from the Karundu Estate I am reminded of our moment in the raspberry field where you said we would never be apart. We enjoyed a milkshake later that night and I remembered feeling so scared because I didn't know how to tell you that I would be moving. I suppose our finish was smooth but I can't wonder why we both didn't fight it. I guess we were both retaining the fantasy that we'd be back together again one day but as the hours pass I see that happening less and less. I will no doubt eventually grow into my own, and obtain my very own army to appease, leaving no time for departures from my new home. We still have Los Immortales Micro-Lot Finca Matalapa from El Salvador and Fazenda Do Sertao from Brazil in common but I'm not sure if that'll be enough. I guess what I'm trying to say is that I have always loved you and probably always will, but we must go on with our lives. It's for the best.

Yours Truly,

Mercury on Main

The terrorists formed a circle at the intersection of Main and Gerrard, shuffling their feet at the thought of the impending battle. But there would be no battle, only a massacre. They were tired, malnourished, unfocused, and unorganized. Most of all, they were scared. Without the benefit of experience, motivation and clean underwear, they stood no chance against Mercury's best agents. They were only two men but with the calibers they possessed (literally and figuratively speaking) they could obliterate armies of thousands.
The taller of the two started to grin as he sized up his opponents. Thunder crackled in the distant and the air started to move as droplets started to appear on the terrorists faces.
One finally let out a whimper, dropped his weapon and started to run. In a flash the deserter fell on his face with a blade exposed from his neck.
And that was it. That was all the terrorists needed to see to confirm their suspicions as they abandoned their posts one by one.
The Upper Beach/Lower East York region was safe again from desolation. The heroes had arrived.

BATTLE OF THE BLOGGERS

Its a little intense today in Mercury, and the staff are restless.........

After muscling one of our dear Mercurial customers out of the way, I will now begin our regular broadcast, Susanna's Sunday Session.

Not familiar? Well pull up a chair and a Costa Rica Tarrazu Feature Latte and get comfortable my chickadees. I mean with closing time occurring at 3pm tomorrow, you'll be wanting to soak up all the Mercury goodness you can today right?

Fear not, don't panic, and don't do anything crazy if you aren't a regular blog reader (I'm not judging you.....) you might not know but with the excitement of new store openings we are installing a fancy-schmancy new machine tomorrow evening and you know we are worth the wait.

Ease your nerves with a oatmeal peanut butter cookie, thats right.......... nibble...........breathe........ nibble again......and relax..............
TA-TA ALICE!! I AM GOING TO BEAT YOU IN A FIGHT OF FISTS!! YOU WILL RUE THE DAY YOU EVER MET ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's the dawn of a new era at Mercury. As I'm sure you all know, we will soon be opening two, count 'em, two new locations-- one at Gerrard and Main, and another at Church and Front. Of course, we can't have three locations operating on only one espresso machine-- so we brought out the big guns.

Check it: it's the Synesso Cyncra three-group espresso machine, the Cadillac of the industry. Under the hood, she's got a 6-litre V10 engine, pushing shots out with 558 horsepower and 330 pounds of torque. Her 6-speed manual transmission lets you blast from zero to sixty in under 4 seconds, with a top speed of more than 200 miles per hour. That's pretty remarkable for an espresso machine, but even then, we wanted more. We custom ordered a hot rod show-quality air intake and ripped out the second seat to add nitrous injectors, upped the suspension to double wishbone, and lowered the chassis three inches. Now, this mean mother looks a lil something like this:
Pretty sweet, eh?

So anyway, we have to install her behind the bar, so we're doing it on Monday, from about 3 onwards. While we'd love to have you all in to see the magic, it'll be a bit of a bumpy ride, so we're closing up shop at 3, so if you need to rev up for the night, better come in before we take off.

EDIT: This post used to say 5, but it will actually be around 3 when we're closing down for the day. Props Ryan.

It was a dark and stormy day, but things at Mercury are HOT HOT HOT! Today's eye candy consists of Damien, Alex, Alice, and the new guys Doug and Matt. And if the sizzling barristas aren't your thing, the feature lattes are sure to grab your attention. This week's feature is the India Monsooned Malabar, yours for the low low price of four hundred and ninety-five pennies.

If per chance you can't handle the heat, or if by some freak act of nature we get some sun today, you may like to enjoy one of Mercury's delicious iced beverages. They come in quite a few varieties, such as the sweet and smooth iced mocha or the zesty and refreshing iced lemonade, made fresh per order especially for you.

And if that doesn't warm your innards, have a cold-hearted laugh at the expense of hilarious small children being bored in the car:

Sincerely,
your favourite regular,
Hannah~

P.S. If you're not content enough with the coffee that you just ordered, you can always picture the mercury staff in speedos, lathered in coconut oil, and completely ripped. In the advent of summer, that's what I've been doing all morning (really all week) long. It makes the time fly like bees.

-Matt

Where does one go on a rainy day like this? I mean besides hiding out at an espresso bar. Where, seriously, where?

You know what are cool? Monkeys. you know what else is cool? wallabies. now smack them together and voila......but ya really wonder what kinda party they are going too. drink coffee bitches!!!!

Adrian's got this blogging thing down. "The first sentence that pops into my head," he says, " I go with." Me, I feel like I need to think it though. Where can I take it? Will I have enough material?
Man it has been hell of out of sight here what with we are listening to Fela Kuti and drinkin' chill iced drinks -- can't let the weather get you down when we are six steps from sunny summer. Grinding great gouts of good beans, before brewing buckets of brew and whippin up some wicked white stuff for cappuccinos and lattes. We've got some new coffees on press, so we'll sample and report back to you soon. It's gonna be

New Matt: Everyday I work with Alice she hassles me to create a blog post. I don't know about you, but for me, unless I'm in the mood, I find it incredibly difficult to write something out of nothing. The other day I suggested that we get a customer to write a blog in order to show "a customer's mercury experience" (she totally bought it). However, Today I'm sort of getting out of it because AMBER has never even written a blog! That puts me three or four up on her! So without further ado...

Amber: Hi! well, i gotta say, i'm a little nervous, some stage fright even... i mean, the precedent on this blog is pretty astoundingly awesome and consistently kickass... its a lot to live up to, really.
so, i may not be one for words so much, at least not on a monday morning... but i'm told i make good coffee. and today, i have something special for y'all.. if you hurry down to the Merc in the next hour or so, i'll pull you an amazing shot of Andrew Barnett's Ecco Reserve Espresso, which i think is pretty much exactly like the comfort food (think mom's spagetti and meatballs) of coffee.
i'll smile at you too!

and i promise to blog more often.

Nas, Ghostface, Mos Def, Immortal Technique, Raekwon, Dead Prez, A Tribe Called Quest, The Pharcyde!!!!! And there are even more amazing acts that will Rocking the Bells this year. So now that all of the heads out there have stopped creaming their panties at this orgasm inducing news its time to pull out all your old old records and start studying. I know it seems like a daunting task but all ya gotta do is load up your respective music listening device and start cramming your brain with beats and let them bounce you back to the days yesteryear. Days of cutting classes to drink in parks then subsequently running from cops for drinking in the park and skipping school. So just ride the nostalgia and sweet tunes until that glorious july day when every head's wet dream comes true.

oh and don't forget to thank your momma for squeezing your screaming ass outta her Va-jj.

eat your peas and carrots, peace

Alright, so I'mma take it down a notch and talk about conversations. Real talk. I was in London last weekend and met a local roaster, and had an interesting discussion. Basically, he told me about the ethical issues he deals with when procuring and selling beans, and they are numerous. I'll bet a lot of you, dear readers, have seen the documentary Black Gold, and that gives you some idea of the markup that occurs between the purchase of beans and their sale after roasting. The fact of the matter is that the farmers, working long, hard hours in developing countries, are making only a tiny fraction of what the coffee is worth.

Anyway, the roaster I was talking to mentioned that he had ramped up his production recently and was nearing a point where his profit margin would be exceedingly comfortable. So comfortable, in fact, that any profit over and above it, he said, would be reinvested in the coffee's source.

Here's a movement I can really get behind. Intelligentsia's been doing this for a while, and they've even recorded it in their statement of principles. Treating the growers with the same respect we have for other artisans-- and yes, their work is a specialized art-- is a major step to righting the history of wrongs that is the current state of the coffee industry. Our suppliers provide an alternative to the poorly grown beans that larger growers-- whose names I won't mention here, but you know who I'm talking about-- pay chintzy amounts for. Coming to the Merc-- and other independent, ethically-inclined local coffee joints-- is like a vote with your wallet for a more responsible industry. And it benefits you in the end: better conditions mean better coffee.

Doug is back! No longer in China, Doug likes to hang out, have a coffee, and run the place. If you like the sound of that you can call 555-5555.
So here we are...
Alex and I ripping it up in an espresso bar near you. Good vibes.
In other news...
I, Alice Berg, am on my way to becoming a grease monkey. Sporting orange coveralls, I was knee deep in Varsol. Don't worry... I was also elbow deep in rubber gloves. With Keef as my mentor, I'm set. Updates will be posted.
Check this out- We will be pouring the Intelligentsia Decaf Black Cat. That's right decaf drinkers, we're pulling out all the stops for you. Life drinking decaf is hard, lets help ya out. So let us know what you think. like the difference? hate it? Didn't know we were even giving you decaf?

Calling Back.

Everybody's talkin' at me, saying I don't blog anymore. Well, I've been busy. I swear, really, it's not that I don't care, I've just been really really busy....with stuff. You know, work....and my hobbies, I never have time for those anymore so I have been doing a LOT more macrame.

Anyway, here I am and I'm not even supposed to be doing this right now. I came all the way down here just for you. Ain't I sweet?

Speaking of sweet.....(WARNING: clever transition coming on)....have you tried the Persephone & Alchemy Blend from Intelligentsia?? All the folks in the know know it's GGGgggggrrreeaatt!

FIve DOllars! (Is the cost of the blend in a fancy French Press, it's also the name of my new book being released by Knopff this Spring. Look for it in stores soon).

On that note I leave you with Ben, Berg, and Cadence...Weapon. Peace.

So what is new? Oh yeah, It was cold and rainy this morning and I started off my shift by pulling my first ever shot! According to beard-Matt, it was pretty good. Oh yeah, and a young couple just consummated their relationship by means of a lengthy and apparent make-out session. Also, Ben is back from his London, Ontario Vacation.
"Frenchin' in the foyer."
I'm really looking forward to the mercury softball team, and I'm expecting to set some kind of record; most strike-outs? Slowest slow pitch? I don't know, all I know is that I want my number to be 80 'cause it's the atomic number for Mercury (Hg). Anyway, It stopped raining so TTC or walk (if you're mad) your way down here and drink some stuff.

Does the Pope always wear red shoes?
PRADA?

Is his underwear hand stitched by nuns?

boxers or briefs?
Commando?

These are questions i want answers to! I'd go look it up myself...but i feel your answers would be much more creative and perhaps factual. I invite you to share all the Pope facts you've got.

Guess what's back on the block!?! not the new kids.. but almost as good...
Our Fresh Pressed Lemonade. That's right we're back to selling you Lemons! Wait, that sounds wrong. AH well, come on in and try a refreshing Lemonade (and if adventurous enough the brand new TRAN MAN SPARKING RASPBERRY LEMONADE).

I feel as an ending i should leave you with the muffin names Damien came up with this morning and this excellent photo i found. Good luck out there... it's a crazy world!

Susanna felt hot and thirsty so she ran up to the Mercury counter and demanded she be served an ice-cold, refreshing sparkling raspberry lemonade. What she wasn't prepared for was the explosion of flavour that was to be released into her psyche. She proceeded to consume the delicious beverage too quickly and had to be resuscitated from her brief coma with a Ethiopia Sidamo shot. (Is there anything coffee can't do?)

Alex didn't sleep much the night before because he was out late again chasing tail. No, not that kind of tail. We're talking about tail-winds. He says they are your best friend when you want to go really fast on your bike so he spent half the night zipping around the streets of Toronto looking for a sweet spot. He should have checked theweathernetwork.com to save himself the trouble but luckily enough Amber Fox was at the helm and pulling fantastic Kid-O shots which saved his miserable life.

These real life testimonies are brought to you by the lifesavers who work the front lines of Mercury. If you aren't with us, then you're against us.

So I think I will survive this my first shift at Mercury. While I haven't quite earned the title of Barista yet, I'd like to think that somewhere between scrubbing the toilet and learning the value of slurping instead of sipping espresso (not in that order) I've achieved some level of intiation.

I'm Susanna by the way, and while I'm a newbie, I think you'll get to see more of me..........
FYI I'll be the adorable yet slightly clueless girl for next while but I fully expect to achieve coffee snobbery (in an endearing way?) by the time you are jetting around on your bike and come in here panting for an iced latte or some sweet sweet icy cold lemonade.

Yours in coffee solidarity,

Susanna Merlo

This is really hard. This is probably my 15th time starting off this entry just because I'm so indecisive about what to blog about. I guess I will keep it short and concise as it would be pretty hard to follow the previous post with an amazing spectacle (I added a picture of a snarling wolf, is that okay?). I'm new and I just started working at five p.m. My name is Matthew Davey and I like old films from the 50s and 60s, garage/weird punk and all the wonderful noises and bloops that span the experimental 'genre'. My family thinks I'm strange because my shoes aren't brown. This is actually my first time on a computer in a week or so because my hard-drive crashed (saddest day ever) and I lost everything. Come see me and say hello and stuff! Alright, that's it!

FINALLY i can continue my illicit love affair with way too many single short espressos and get all tweaky and slightly too happy so i can serve all of you titillatingly terrific and tantalizing tasty beverages with a jumpy misdemeanor. by the by my name is Douglas Hayter and i am the newest member of the Mercury crew. to give ya all ya need to know about me i LOVE poutine (i would sustain myself on it if it wouldn't kill me. PS. go watch "danse la poutine" by TTC and omnikron on youtube its wut my dreams are made of) and i LOVE forties (of the olde english variety, i would sustain myself on them if it wouldn't kill me). so come drop by and say hello most dashing and charming fella you'll likely meet in a day or two and we can discuss the finer points of the classic curd vs. grated poutine argument or the equally epic OE vs. Colt battle that has waged through the ages.

Neil is going to see MAN MAN tonight. You got it Pontiac, guy guy the band. I will not be attending the festivities; therefore, I do not need to better acquaint myself with their sound. I have changed the tunes to The Smiths. Then i found this amusing little number to your left...and thought "yeah, yeah, that right baby. I'm going with it!"

We still are doing a good job of keeping beans on the shelves despite the fact that a weekend has come and gone. If you're feeling a bit adventurous you might want to try the Millers Blend the next time you come in. It was developed as a tribute blend for the man who taught the intelli guys how to roast. So how bad could it be? answer, none. It just can't go wrong.

Well happy Hunting as they say in French.

And You thought we were just being funny. Well let me tell you, little Jimmy didn't think so. After we sold him for a pretty penny life has never been the same. Sure, he's the youngest tightrope walker this country has ever seen. Sure, he can dance a jig with a family of elephants. Sure, his new adopted parents love him very much-- but due to the fact that they are clowns, he has a hard time deciphering if they are in fact happy or sad. He tends to sit at the window of the circus tent watching the rain fall lightly on the ground and wonder... why? why was i left alone at mercury? Why was i sold to the circus?

Okay. I have no idea where Alice was going with that
but
.....

I think it's an opportune time to announce that Mercury is formally acknowledging its outer space roots and collabo-ing with the United Federation of Planets on a series of Star Trek-inspired special menu of drinks:

The Wesley Crusher- single decaf soy latte with two pumps of vanilla, one of chocolate, one of hazelnut, one of caramel, with cinnamon and chocolate on top.

The Tasha Yar- three double ristrettos in one cup.

Qagh- Worf's favourite. Spoiled cream, four shots espresso, and the grinds. Possibly alive? After you drink it, we line up and kick you.

The Picard- Tea, Earl Grey. Hot.

The Deanna Troi- Whatever the person after you was going to order.

Or you could branch out from your usual fave and try out one of Intelligentsia's latest single origins on press, our feature latte, or just a little something you haven't tried yet!

We want feedback, so make sure you select an away team and "bean" down to the Merc today. Our prime directive? Deliciousness.

Monday, March 31, 2008

Dear Amber,

I woke up to a phone call today requesting my presence at the Mercury because one of our beloved barista's was not feeling quite himself. I raced down here knowing that a delicious cup of of Bali Paradise Valley and it's peanut buttery goodness would be waiting for me here, with you as well. In no time, (well more like an exciting 18mins) I got down here but alas, no blond bombshell was anywhere in sight. A handsome, young, upstart, instead, was here to greet me (as well as the morning horde) as I proceeded to begin my morning, the same way I ended my night last night. Perhaps we'll meet again in an espresso bar out west, when we're both too tired to make it all the way east. Maybe we'll cross paths when the sun's smile is visible, the bird's singing can be heard, and the buds on the trees start peaking out. I'll be waiting on a green, plastic patio chair with a cold one waiting for us on the table, behind the delivery truck, right by the main road where we used to sit and make fun of the folks that saunter by, oblivious to the fact they're being laughed at. I can almost see it.

I think it is perfectly reasonable, and in fact natural, to want to hang out with a monkey. Our close cousins have much to teach us. So I will pose the age old question, one which has plagued humankind for centuries. Great minds: philosophers, mathematicians, astrologers, anthropologists, have all weighed in on the matter and now it's your turn.
Would you rather spend one hour with three hired priests OR spend three hours with a hired monkey?
An inside tip puts a hired monkey at a rate of $1500.00 an hour. "Sure is a lot of money" you say, but in retrospect the New Yorker with a dirty little secret paid $2500.00 more per hour for his lady than he would have for a monkey. "How does this relate to coffee?" you ask -- boy you sure are an inquisitive little fellow aren't you!-- Nothing! it has nothing to do with coffee. But one of the benifits of going to a coffee house is to get out of the house and socialize. So here it is. We're making it very easy for you. Come down. Join the rest of us, forget the hustle and bustle, and sit down and practice the art of conversation.
As you sit you have a plethora of options when it comes to a tasty beverage.
ON PRESS- we've got the Cruz del Sur (Peru) and the Flecha Roja (Costa Rica).
FEATURE LATTE- The wondrous Bali is back. Bali Paradise Valley * a noise which suggests salivation. (Or salvation, depending on how strongly you feel about beans).
BARISTA- Neil, Damien, and Alice (soon joined by Alex). What's not to like?

SYPHON? More like SY-PHUN! Or...FUN! SY-FUN!

So, yes I am talking about syphons. Why, I hear you all asking out from behind your laptops in your respective homes, well I'll tell you why. It's because some of you may have seen Matt "experimenting" with some Bunsen burners and syphons recently. Don't worry, we're not planning on blowing anything up...it's really nothing like that, we're just trying to bring you the best cup of coffee possible and that takes a little experimentation. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tkOCKbEj-vQ&feature=related

For further information on this fascinating subject of coffee syphoning stop on by and ask one of us friendly baristas we'll gladly tell you about it. Matthew and i are thinking about taking our chances with the Yirgacheffe and brewing up a batch this afternoon. If you're here we'll share. Promise.

Tuesday, March 25, 2008

You're so suave.

Oh, don't be so modest, you know you are.

Alice and I were just talking about you. You really ought to come in more, and tell us about what you're doing these days. You're always up to such cool stuff.

I wish you came to our party on Saturday. It's always so much fun when you come-- we laugh and laugh and laugh... I remember that party you threw back in '86-- when you hired that magician to dress up like Brett 'The Hit Man' Hart? I cherish that memory, and to this day, I have retained a napkin to better recall the experience:

I guess what they say is true-- you'll always have the memories. And in my case I also have the tattoo. People say I'm crazy, but I say "it's worth it!"

Well I'm just taking it easy these days. Real Slow. Nice and Lazy. Don't care much for show boatin' around town. Can you believe we got Mercury T-Shirts?! Brown or Army Green. It says 'I care about coffee but i also care about fashion' in a 'i haven't lost my cool' sorta way. Yeah, and at $20.00 a pop that's pretty much all I'm wearing these days. Other shirts- who needs 'em, you know. I like to just sit around in my Merc shirt and drink the Feature Ethiopia Yirgacheffe. Gets ya going in a chocolaty rich comforting sort of way. Precious like a kitten.

So why not come by? The first one's on me (But then we're gonna gouge ya).
